Network Operations
The Unitymedia cable network is one of the most modern in Europe in terms of size, performance and technical development prospects. Significant investments in technology and network development connect more and more people to the world of digital broadband.
Unitymedia operates one of Germany’s largest interconnected cable infrastructures: 8.7 million homes are passed by the Unitymedia network. It dates back to the former state-operated network of Deutsche Bundespost, which was built according to a telecommunication standard. Upgraded by Unitymedia to a hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) network, it is 100 % digital and combines maximum transmission capacity, stability and security with high performance and cost-efficiency. This technical design is fundamental to the provision of competitively priced and advanced triple play services.
2-Way Upgraded Network with Fiber Power
All homes passed by Unitymedia can receive both analog and digital TV and radio channels; 8.2 million homes or 94% have already been upgraded for access to broadband internet and telephony services at the end of Q1 2011. Unitymedia is thereby not only upgrading all metropolitan areas in NRW and Hesse, but also many rural areas and plans to continue its network upgrade in selected rural areas. In November 2009, Unitymedia startet the roll-out of Euro DOCSIS 3.0 technology and accelerated the fiber power upgrade process during 2010 offering 128 MBit/s high speed internet and demonstrating its speed and capacity advantage over DSL. The target is to have over 90% of all homes passed upgraded to Euro DOCSIS 3.0 capability by year-end 2011.
